Determining McKinney-Vento Eligibility

This on-demand training video walks you through the statutory definition of homelessness under Subtitle VII-B of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and guides you in applying McKinney-Vento eligibility criteria to real-world scenarios involving children and youth. Using NCHE’s McKinney-Vento Eligibility Determinations Flowchart as a framework, you’ll build confidence in making well-supported eligibility determinations, learn helpful hints for eligibility decision-making, become aware of common eligibility mistakes to avoid, and access resources for additional learning. By viewing this training, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate the statutory definition of homelessness under Subtitle VII-B of the McKinney-Vento Act;
  • Apply eligibility criteria to determine which living situations qualify students for McKinney-Vento services;
  • Navigate common eligibility scenarios, including doubled-up housing, transitional housing, and unaccompanied youth situations, and;
