Understanding and Implementing School Selection Under the McKinney-Vento Act

This webinar is designed for state coordinators, local homeless education liaisons, community partners, and other educators who work with children and youth experiencing homelessness (CYEH), including local education agency administrators, school leaders, teachers, and instructional support personnel.
Webinar Objectives:
- explain statutory requirements and parameters for school selection and best interest under the McKinney-Vento Act,
- apply student-centered factors when guiding families and unaccompanied youth through school selection decisions, and
- implement LEA- and school-level strategies to support smooth transitions when a school transfer occurs.

- describe the purpose and key principals of subtitle VII-B of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, including the definition of homelessness and rights of eligible students;
- identify children and youth experiencing homelessness using appropriate tools and strategies, and ensure their immediate enrollment and access to services; and
- describe the role and responsibilities of the state coordinator and local liaisons.

Each edition highlights recent editions to the NCHE website and other resources of interest to state coordinators, local liaisons, and partners supporting children and youth experiencing homelessness. New editions are released each quarter and distributed through the NCHE listserv.
